Valve: 'Left for dead 3 will happen'

"A 3? You know, some time down the road," the long-standing Valve writer told Eurogamer over the weekend. "Like anything, I would say that to all of our games. So that's not a promise of when or where.
"I really love working on that series," he added. "It's one of my favourite series. It's just so much fun with the characters and the world. I love zombies and I love horror. So, yeah."
Prior Left 4 Deads have traded on a hyper-responsive, punishing AI system known as the "AI Director", which alters where and when zombies spawn in response to Survivor success or lack thereof. Intriguingly, Faliszek reckons there's something to the idea of a Left 4 Dead which puts a player in charge of all that.
"That was the thing with that rumour that came out about The Cabin in the Woods," he said, referring to a cancelled Left 4 Dead 2 DLC pack which would have taken place in the same world as the cult MGM film. "That got no further than us discussing it, but we thought it would be cool idea if somebody could play as the dungeon master and put it out. But obviously there's a lot of work that needs to be done to do that. But it would be interesting.
"You'd have to start testing it," Faliszek elaborated. "You'd need an economy of points that the dungeon master was spending. There's a 10 vs. 10 mod for Left 4 Dead, and one day me and Matt Scott, the animator, were playing it.
"For a really long stretch of time we just kept saving up all the points, and at one point we just started spawning witches everywhere, just non-stop. It made us laugh. Stuff like that you have to figure out."[/quote]
While I have never played the Left for Dead games (and I don't plan to) I guess it's good news to know Valve are going to start counting to three. I guess that means Half Life 2 Episode 3 (or Half Life 3) could be coming sooner than we thought.

It was still enjoyable, so I don't see how it would put people off the franchise.[/quote] I'm with you - I sank hundreds of hours into L4D2 and usually had a really good time - but it was still a bad move releasing the game so quickly after the first. Think of it this way - I remember seeing L4D's playercount on PC reach 50,000 several nights a week. L4D2, I never saw it go over 30,000, and that was once...after that, it was always between 10,000 and 20,000, which dropped steadily. Now it's extremely rare to peak over 10,000.
