So... As many of you that have been around for a while have surely noticed, there seems to rarely be any competent players on Halo: Combat Evolved PC these days. I'm sure there are more in private servers but I don't even see that many populated private servers. Every single time I join a game I get a crazy k/d of something like 164/12. If there are any decent players (Compared to the other players) are there, they seem to call you out for using an aimbot even though you're missing 4/5 of your shots at them.
What happened? I remember playing this back in 2009 and it wasn't this bad. It was filled with great players back in 2004 - 2007, it decreased a bit somewhere during 2007 and now it's just absolutely terrible. Most the people who are playing just seem absolutely brain dead and I can't even name one game that I play that has players as brain dead as this. It just makes me hold my head in shame. A part of me wishes it was shut down just so people don't see how embarrassing 90% of the population is.
What are your thoughts? Do you think I'm over exaggerating? Do you think they're not really that bad but it's Halo PC that's just "Too hard"? Is Timmy still stuck in that well after all these months?

I suck now so you are probably talking about me. I stopped playing ritually after 06 so when I hop on now I suck ass with the pistol.
-
I hardly ever play and when I do I suck, but still usually get a kd of around 25 with the pistol. It's kinda sad...

The players in my clan ([ZÅ]), are pretty decent.
Posted by: JunkyMonkey The players in my clan ([ZÅ]), are pretty decent.
This is more directed towards the overall average Halo players which take up about 90% of the game's population. I'm sure there are many good players still around but at least 90% seem so bad it's like they're playing an FPS for the first time.

It isn't just Halo PC. Playing Halo Reach I'm forced to put up with one or more types of idiots in pretty much every game such as: 1. People who are just stupid. They do things such as taking the tank out to the middle and getting it immediatly killed on an objective game on Blood Gulch. 2. Idiots who betray you if you pick up the sniper or sometimes another weapon that they think belongs to them. Usually if they do it to me I troll them and get them to betray me one or two more times until I can boot them. (the worst thing I have ever been betrayed for was the overshield on Prisoner) 3. People who call hax on people who are good at getting headshots or killing them with some other weapon.
-
It's not my fault I'm bad with a mouse and keyboard. :( But yeah Reach is still worse.
Posted by: MrR46 It's not my fault I'm bad with a mouse and keyboard. :(
Actually it most likely is. :P You just need to practice at it. Just complete the campaign using the mouse and keyboard. I personally guarantee you that you'll come out of it feeling comfortable with it.
Posted by: Aj6627 It isn't just Halo PC. At least 90% of the players are completely useless. Do you know how often I find people who don't even walk? Seriously... Every time I play I end up finding one guy who literally stands in there as if he has no keyboard and fires shots at you. That's a lot worse than not using the tank effectively. People betraying you for stuff on Reach isn't stupidity; It's people being jerks. When I play on Reach, I rarely come across someone that is completely oblivious to what they're doing. I can't remember the last time I ran into someone on any other game that was so bad they would run into a wall, turn slowly, then continue to walk. I've seen that happen countless times over the same time period with Halo PC. People call other people out for hacking far more often on Halo PC. If fraps wasn't messed up for me right now, I'd get on Halo Custom Edition right now and record myself playing 5 games. I would guarantee you that I would be called a hacker by at least 6 people in those 5 games. I've only ever been called a hacker twice on Reach. [Edited on 05.04.2012 8:47 AM PDT]

I hate to say it, but I'd honestly rather have useless people on my team(aka cannon fodder and distractions for the enemy) than jerks who are actively fighting against their own team. For example: One game I played on Reach in BTB, there were 2-3 jerks on the other team that continually suicided in the water on Blood Gulch. They ended up combining to go ~-50. I would gladly trade 2-3 of them on my team for 5 useless idiots that get 1-3 kills at most and die a lot. If there's 3 of us that are strong enough players, we can make up for the morons. We couldn't make up for jerks like that if they were on our team.
-
I feel bad that OP is saying how much I suck. No I don't walk into the walls and -blam!-. I may miss like all my shots now because I just play this game casually not in clans and stuff for like 5 years ago. I play to have a good time, try my best, and hope I am not complete cannon fodder. Most importantly to have fun. [Edited on 05.04.2012 4:27 PM PDT]

I'm just asking why it seems pretty much everyone on Halo PC now seems to be absolutely terrible. It's not just that they're not good at the game; it's that they seem as though it's their very first video game ever. It's that terrible most of the time. I've only ever played with you on Halo 2 Vista. I understand playing for fun. I actually play for fun too. Most of the time I don't even care if everyone else is that bad; I just take advantage of it and go crazy. I'm just asking people why people are generally so bad now. This is another problem... Every other game I get onto that's this old and has about the same population number has very good players. If I go onto Unreal Tournament (original), I have a hard time doing well. I get onto Quake III Arena, I have a hard time doing well. I get onto Halo: Combat Evolved and I feel like I'm completely uncontested. It actually feels like I am hacking with how good I do. I'm not even a good player! I'm above average at best! I agree there. The only other game I play of that age is Raven Shield. (pick it up everyone, by the way, since it's the best Rainbow Six game on PC) Pretty much everyone on there is good at the game and has been playing for at least a year or two.

You should try getting on Unreal Tournament 99. It's insanity. If JacobGRocks (or anyone else that plays) is lurking around, you can verify for me that pretty much everyone playing is damn good at the game. There are literally no noobs left. In fact, I felt like the noob and I can compete with godlike bots... :/

Back when a lot more people played it, I could get into a game and play just fine. These days however, every game I've played has had a bad connection. Guess it's what I get for living at the bottom of Australia, hah

I can't deny that 90 percent of the Halo Combat Evolved PC community is not skilled however I am skeptical as to whether or not that is an accurate percentage. I know Halo Combat Evolved PC is not what it used to be. But if you look around you could probably find some servers with decent to veteran players. I usually play on servers that attract quality players who play as a team and are skilled.
Posted by: Dr Syx
Posted by: Ben2974 That's . . . cool.
That's . . . useful.
What could he have said that would be considered useful? "Yes, the majority of the Halo PC population is terrible at the game they play." That's pretty much all you can say without going into comparisons between the console games and the PC games, which is nonsense anyway. You can't compare the number of people who are good at Halo PC to the number that excel at Reach. They're two different games on different systems with different control schemes published in different time schemes with different cover art.
Posted by: Tempus Irae What could he have said that would be considered useful? "Yes, the majority of the Halo PC population is terrible at the game they play."
It would have been useful to actually, you know, discuss why Halo PC is in this situation. The one thing absolutely no one here has done yet. That was my reasoning for creating this thread. The reason I'm saying that was useless was because I could tell he was being demeaning and he wasn't adding anything to the discussion at all.
That's pretty much all you can say without going into comparisons between the console games and the PC games, which is nonsense anyway. They're two different games on different systems with different control schemes published in different time schemes with different cover art.
I'm not comparing PC versus console... Why the hell does everyone think I'm always comparing PC to console. It's like people assume if you're a PC gamer you're always comparing PC vs console with everything you say. I'm comparing the Halo's population's average skill level to every other game out there. I'm trying to figure out why it's so damn low. I'm even specifically comparing it to games that are around the same age that all seem to have a high average skill whereas Halo PC has the lowest I've ever seen. Just as a side note, you can compare the average skill of a population and why it's like that between the games. Platform, genre, control devices and the time they were released are all things you compare to figure out why something is one way while the other is that way. It's moronic to say you can't compare things because they're different. It's the exact opposite in fact. It's impossible to compare two things that are exactly the same. Comparing positives and negatives/the population of Halo against every other FPS is easily sound. Differences are what you compare.
Posted by: Dr Syx If I go onto Unreal Tournament (original), I have a hard time doing well.
Keep in mind how damned fast the game is. UT is one of the funnest games I've ever played (Since I was 8), and I was easily one of the best Zark (Rapid fire sniper rifles) players from about 2004-2007. Unreal takes time to learn that the Shock Combo is what you do. Now, on topic of Halo, I'll find out in a bit. Name's Lavama if I ever play you.

I'm above average on Unreal Tournament and I find competition constantly when I play. I just finished playing and got an ultra kill with the sniper rifle getting a headshot 4/5 times. My point with that was the average population on Unreal Tournament are far better at the game/understanding the game than on Halo: Combat Evolved. It's not about how good I am.
Now, on topic of Halo, I'll find out in a bit. Name's Lavama if I ever play you.
Sure! Hope to see you.

I forced myself to play Halo 1 and 2 pc last week. I think that Halo PC has been kicked to the side, and that we are dying a slow, painful death. Its over....

Yeah, you're right. http://tinyurl.com/83u4x4l (the stupid POS forum software kept breaking the link to steam community, so I had to tinyurl it) After not playing at all for a couple months, and not playing more than a game or two for easily 6+ months, I jumped on, finally found a vanilla server, and did that in the second game I played. Sad. [Edited on 05.05.2012 8:10 PM PDT]

Yeah... Take a look at this. An FFA should NOT end like this on Chill Out with that many people. If you would have asked me if that was possible a few years ago I would have been clutching my sides with laughter.
