I really like making a story out of a video game.
For example:
In mass effect you could make numerous choices, so my character's backstory (Earthborn) can purposely effect how I would make my decisions.
If I had a Shepard with a bad past, I would purposely make worse decisions and stay in character.

And, my oblivion/skyrim character. They're the same person, Hrul, a Nord who woke up in jail not knowing who he was. He always thought he was an imperial with red hair, so he named himself Flame. But after getting out, becoming the Listener, Gray Fox, and murdering entire cities, using his faithful sword Umbra. He was overpowered one day, and spent the rest of his life in jail. 40 years later, the Emperor visited his cell as an escape route, and once he got out, he vowed to agin reception, and wipe out all evil. He became the arch mage, Fighters Guild Master, And all the other guild masters, except for the bad ones. He completed all the daedric quests, and destroyed all the artifacts. Once coming upon Hermaeus Mora, He offered him a chance. Redemption. Hermaeus Mora, the master of all secrets, told him his name, and his true origin. Hrul, now at the time, is withered and old, and wanting to do everything different. Mora gave him this chance, and made him young again. But in return, sent him 200 years in the future. And out came Hrul, the Nord, given a new chance, in the land of Skyrim. And now, its his choice and how he's going to spend this next chance. PS: He ended up killing everyone, becoming the listener, and Killing everyone again, and hoarding all daedric artifacts. Hrul: Ive learned nothing.
This is epic win.
Love this :D
Funny thing is, none of this is fake. This is really what happened.

sometimes, but i'm working on doing that more.

As a fan of games like D&D, I don't really need to make my video game experiences feel the same way. D&D is fueled by imagination, and is the best choice for role-playing. If I'm playing Skyrim, I'm playing a video game.
-
Actually I have a bad habit of becoming TOO immersed... Like: Skyrim: Walking everywhere, routines, eating breakfast lunch and diner. Sleeping at night. Getting a job. Mass Effect: Same thing
-
Yes, I try to make a character look like me and make decisions I would make.
-
i murdered everyone i came across and wore a police uniform in Fallout 3 my characters name was Loughner
-
Sometimes.
-
In Mass Effect, I make decisions based on what I would most likely do.
-
Posted by: DAS B00T x2 Somewhat.
-
I play 'em doing the choices I, as a person would do.
-
I just role play whatever the hell I want to be. Like in Mass Effect I was a total ass until the Normandy got grounded, then I turned into a freaking angel.
-
No, role playing just seems pointless to me, I tried it once on Skyrim and found it instantly restricted my character, I couldn't take perks from certain trees, most crafting elements were instantly out because they just didn't seem like something "my character would do", I did a quest where you can get a useful perk out of it, but because of my character's "background" I had to do the complete wrong thing, failing the quest. I'd rather not limit my hours of playtime. Though I do always try to challenge myself. Play the game on master, don't use cheap enchantments, kill an ancient dragon with a woodcutter's axe etc etc.
-
I do a little bit, but not much.
-
I do it...a lot But not in Mass Effect since it doesn't feel like Shepherd is MY character.
-
Oh yea. I once made a Khajiit in Skyrim that did nothing but collect random items. Then when I found the traveling caravans, I would just follow them around and be a trader with them. Nerdy, no? [Edited on 03.03.2012 2:28 AM PST]

Sometimes. Usually its no more than "I'm good" or "I'm bad", but sometimes I branch out a little more. Like for my main character in Skyrim, I developed a short backstory, try to do things that would reflect his personality, and I don't save scum when I get caught pickpocketing. So far it's led to a more enjoyable experience.

We can say any game is a role playing game, because it's not literal reality.
-
This is misleading, that is not really ROLE PLAYING in RPG's. That is just making ROLE PLAYING choices.

It depends on the game. Usually, when there are choices to be made, I see them as either 1) An easy way out 2) A fight 3) Bribery 4) Knight in Shining armor time 5) Devil's Incarnate
-
Yep, I'm a raging mage in Dark Souls.
Posted by: evilcam No. I could never keep the whole thing straight in my head, if I ever did try (which I never will). I'll do a small amount of roleplay in most games I play (at least, those that are immersive). Just small actions that could be comparable to what a "real" person would do in that situation. Never do I shout, "FOR GLORY, WE MUST SAVE SKYRIM FROM THE IMPERIALS" or something like that. It's a light touch. Edit: A good example is the night time city in ODST, coop on Legendary. I'd be "leader" and we'd all make our tags military ranks and we'd assign roles and use squad tactics on the Covenant. But we weren't talking in military chatter or anything. It was just we'd cut normal talk down a little bit. Like I said, it's all for immersion. Edit 2: A better question would be "Do you role play in games with campaigns?" A little bit in FFVII and X, but not too much. It'd probably be easier in MMOs.
