The never ending quest for the STICKY thread.

Ok I'll admit a lot of threads I posted up I tried to see if they can become a sticky and well have no such luck. And I am sure I'm not alone on this. So here comes the big question. How do you get a STICKY? I am sure that it's the Mods choice on what threads gets a sticky and who dosn't. So what would be the criteria that they look at when reviewing threads? Anyone that has posted a thread that became a sticky tell us what you have done. Also thoes who tried to post a sticky thread tell us what you tried in your threads.

 • It's not like some sort of medal you get to wear around, it's just a tool to help keep great threads or helpful threads active, and besides, the mods need to keep the stickies down to a minimum, it would be fair to other posters if the whole first page was stickies.

 • Well, you could just look at all the stickied posts and see for yourself just what makes them so great. [Edited on 8/14/2004 12:41:05 AM]

 • Also if your thread is useful to many -- it's more likely to be stickeyed. I've had like 3 stickeyed, and I've asked for 2 to be taken down, (Although I wish I hadn't taken down the Seventh Column Revitalization,,}

 • Those who seek a Sticky shall never find it. The Sticky is as slippery as a bar of soap in the bath... the harder you grasp after it, the faster it squirts out from the hand. The Sticky is not a destination. It is a state. Do not seek a Sticky, grasshopper. Seek instead to perfect your posts, to craft them with care and thought and dilligence, and you may find that you have attained a Sticky without even trying. Zen and the Art of the Sticky -- Steve still ain't shaving his head and wearing saffron, though. Edit: because the tagline reference is a little opaque, here is a link to clear it up if you wish. [Edited on 8/14/2004 8:35:24 AM]

 • Marinealver... a start might be to not make it obvious you want a stickied post, second is to post something WORTH stickying (ie not this) and third is not to colour 1 in 5 words... it's irritating. Well good luck anyway...

 •
Posted by: durandal8371010 .... and third is not to colour 1 in 5 words... it's irritating. Well good luck anyway...
So THAT explains the seizure I just had. And the bleeding from my eyes too. Seriously, as many have said far more eloquently than I ever will... Make your posts worthwhile to the community and they may get a sticky. Not as a specific recogntion of you, but a sign that the topic/subject is of value to the community as a whole.

 • I think a start to getting a post sticked is to stop posting MC vs.... threads. Or 'What is the coolest way you dided threads' or...... the list is endless.

 • I've got a sticky in the flood. Reiginko told me to message him with a link to the thread when I made it and he'd sticky it. I did but I saw yoozel on so too so once the topic was falling off the face of the earth, I asked yoozel too. So just wait for a mod to ask you to make a thread in which he'll stickify! Or make one of those "good" threads that "helps" people. Either way.

 •
Posted by: Banshee Barron I've never gotten a sticky thread. ... Don't even start Shai! ;-)
It wasn't him you had to worry about! Mwa ha haaaa!!! I've had 3 stickied threads. Well, really 2 I guess. I made a nice post during E3 helping people to find the information they were looking for, mainly movies. I didn't ask for it to be sticked, but I did point out to a mod how helpful it was. My second stickied post was this one, the original How to play Marathon post. After a while, I realized that not enough people were seeing this thread, so I rewrote it to be better and made a news story to go along with it. Reading all 3 of these posts, you can tell they have much in common. They are well-written. I put thought into them, updated them, and made sure they had the good grammar and spelling. They are helpful. I was telling people wher to find the stuff they needed/would want. They are still helpful. Even after being un-stickied, people still asked me weeks later where those posts went, because they still needed them. If you can make a good post that is really helpful and stays helpful for a long time, it will get stickied.

 • Well, now that we're out comparing our, er, stickies... I guess I've had one. But I didn't write it (it was about something I wrote), and it only stayed sticky for a couple of days before the mods took it back down, and I was a bit relieved when they did. However the thread still bobbed up around the top anyway, for three glorious weeks. :) Thanks again, guys. It was awesome. The common elements to sticky threads are: [*] Timely: they're all about something that's going on right now, or is of ongoing interest. [*] Well-written: as Rip points out they're all well put together, including grammar and spelling. Don't forget paragraphing and white-space. They're easy to read as a result. (The preview button is your friend on this... I just caught a mistake with it right now.) [*] Useful: they're all about how to get more use out of something, whether it's a game or a convention or just speculation. They're not just announcements, at least most of the time. [*] Interesting: they're about something that a broad selection of fans will find interesting. [*] Enduring: they're about stuff that will stick around for a while... something won't get stickied if it's just for a day. [*] On-topic: probably the biggest one... an essay on your cat's urinary tract infection isn't going to get stickied. (At least, not here. Ew.) However, ways to improve the forum are likely to get stickied here; ways to get added value out of Marathon are likely to get stickied in the Underground; new ways to Warthog jump are likely to get stickied in the Library; etc. -- Steve's gonna end the list here, as these are the biggies, but there are probably other factors involved. (Digs into wallet) How much this time, Maka?

 •
Posted by: Psyched You can also ask mods to unsticky them. Which is good. I guess.
I've asked for two of mine to be unstickeyed -- I simply wanted other good threads to get the spot -- I still have one that's stickeyed - but it only got stickeyed a couple days ago - and the first one I had stickeyed got dropped of it's own accord... But - DO NOT ASK them to stickey it -- they almost CERTAINLY will not... Anton got the magic formula posted - so I'll leave it to that... (Go Steve! - It's ya birfday! - Go Steve! - It's ya birfday!)
