The Posts Theory

Well, I had a huge project going about the posting habits of the Flood. Then I decided to stop (I had a ton of research) since none of my experiments could really be considered that valid because of all the variables. Then I realized that I could post one test. The results are interesting! Excerpt from “The Posts Theory” by Douglas Brown Member Popularity These tests will see if people post based on the thread maker’s popularity. Both threads are nearly identical, posted at around the same time by different users. Thread 1 By Douglas Brown (Not Popular) The thread seems solid enough, and I tried to make it very open to discussion and debate. I even posted it in the afternoon when there is the greatest number of people. It received zero posts before dying. (how can you die if you never live?) Thread 2 by Halifax (Very Popular) The same basic thread as above. I changed a few sentences (No more than 3-4) and Halifax added his own title and lead-in line. It received 17 posts before dieing. Please don’t think I’m whining, I’d use another less popular person if I wasn’t afraid of offending them. If you’d like to see any more research, just ask. I have some things I’ve gathered just from observing the forums for while, a survey, a list of theories, and that’s as far as I got before realizing that neutral members don’t exist.

 • Excerpt from "The Posts Theory" by Douglas Brown Survey It seems a good thing to begin with. This shows what people think they are most likely to respond to.

 • the only thing about the first part is the time. People tend to login like afterwork/school later in the night.... most people r still at work/school at 2:50

 • Your experiment has no control, so it's really more of an inquiry.

 • Well Halifax made his thread 5 days after you did. Which means more members could have been on at that time. Im not saying that's the case, but it is a variable.

 • We tried doing a control. We ended up just saying "screw it" to the whole thing because there are way too many variables involved.

 • I'll just post. Excerpts from "The Posts Theory" by Douglas Brown [*]Popular Thread Subjects - Paintball and airsoft, specifically questions regarding guns. Evidence - Popularity threads, such as “Best Whatnot” and “Most Level Headed So-and-So” -Simple (easy to reply to) and creative “the user above you” threads.Evidence [*]Theories These are some of the theories behind what motivates posts. Some of them have already been disproved. - I thought it was the thread maker. But, this disproved my theory. I figured that even if “gruntfarmer” was well known, that number of posts was too high to justify that. - I thought that it might be someone’s post that everyone else piggy-backs off of, but the above thread, as well as this one, this one , and this one all prove that theory wrong. -As a far cry I thought maybe the time of day (I’m not posting when everyone is asleep) or forum activities at the time might effect it, but this one and this one were both made at different times and they still have a many posts despite their poor quality. It might have to do with the number of spammers (yes, spam is counted as a post) on at the time, thought I heavily doubt it. -Could it be that people respond to threads created by members they like or look up to so that that person could see the poster(s) support them? This I shall test with the “Member Popularity” experiment. - I think that maybe people respond to poor threads to make themselves feel smarter, make jokes, or maybe because they think they’re helping? The “Spam Test” shall see what the posts are saying, whether it is false humor, false help, or other. -There is the issue of the topic. If it is a good, popular topic, like master chief, or video games, or something then people are more likely to respond to it regardless of the way it is presented. Whereas a topic about comparative physics is more than likely to be ignored, once more, regardless of the way in which it is presented. . I hope to get a feel for what the Flood likes and dislikes as far as topics go. _________Stories are touchy issues, as, being more than a paragraph, tend to not be read by the average member, only those that care for the author’s work or the story told. _________How-to guides are also iffy, since the thing being instructed might be beyond the regular Flood’s age group. I will test this theory with the “Topic Quality” experiment. -There is also the issue of forum. Maybe there are more intelligent people in the Septagon who are more likely to frown upon bad threads and bump the good ones? This I will test with the “Septagon Post Quality” experiment. -Maybe there are different members in the Septagon who are beyond liking members enough to post in a thread just because they like the person. I will test this with the “Septagon Member Popularity” experiment. -Halifax has the theory that people respond to stupid, spam threads because it is easy on the mind and gives them a chance to be witty. I will be testing this with my “Spam Test,” though it seems the majority of posts in a spam topic inform the thread maker that the thread will be locked and that spam isn’t allowed, dispite the fact that this has been stated by five members above them. We shall soon see. [*]Current Knowledge/Special Cases - If a mod makes a thread, it will more than likely get the more posts than the same thread posted by a normal member. -If a large thread is going on and it’s awesome and everyone is evolved, then the other threads may get slightly less posts since most of the online members are devoting their time to that main thread. -If a conversation starts in a thread, then it will defiantly get more posts. -If someone goes off onto a more popular topic in the middle of a bad thread it will get more posts, but those are for that more popular topic, not the thread’s title top. Most of that stuff is just stuff from experience.

 • Well it might seem like a waste of time to you, but if someone is personally interested in something, it isn't considered a waste of time to them.. [Edited on 6/26/2006]

And it was fascinating to see what kind of things would pop up. I think I made my fastest ever growing thread in the course of this study, lol.

 • Here's how I was going to do the tests. Topic quality Different posts (same good quality), different topics, same member, same time, different day Thread quality different posts (different quality), same topic, same member, same time, different days Member Popularity Same post (same quality), same topic, different members, same time, different days Septagon Thread Quality different posts (different quality), same topic, same member, same time, different days, in the Septagon Septagon Member Popularity. Same post (same quality), same topic, different members, same time, different days, in the Septagon. Also, I always see airsoft/paintball topics get tons of posts, even if it's just "post pics of ur gun here." When I made one, well.... see for yourself (no, I don't do airsoft or paintball, that thread was for the project.)
