FAQ on Bungie's new IP, PS3, 343 Industries and the future of Halo
Introduction
Hello! I have noticed that on several forums including the Reach, Universe, and Flood forums, that several members of the community have been up in arms about Bungie Hiring for the PS3. I have created this thread in the hopes that it grows, and from now on whenever a new thread about the hiring or fate of the IP or the PS3, this thread will be linked to cover all their concerns.
History: The new IP and the PS3 hiring
On April 29, 2010, Bungie studios and Activision Blizzard announced an exclusive, 10 year partnership. Fall 2010, Bungie announced they were hiring for the PS3. On July 23, 2009, it was made official that Microsoft Games had forged a new publisher called 343 Industries, and that 343 would eventually take the reigns of Halo from Bungie. February 1, 2010: http://bungieaerospace.com/
FAQ: Bungie-Activision partnership
Q: What does this mean for Bungie? A: Bungie studios are still and independent developer. Activision has limited say into what Bungie studios creates as games. The 10-year partnership does not mean that Activision has taken over Bungie. Q: Does the 'partnership' bear similar to Microsofts acquiring of Bungie? A: No. Microsoft became Bungie's parent company and overseer when they acquired Bungie in 2000. This Bungie-Activision partnership does not mean that Activision has taken over Bungie, or vice versa. Q: Okay, so then what does it mean? A: It means that Bungie games, for the next 10 years, will be published by Activision. Much how an author {Bungie) will write a book (make a game), and go to a publisher (Activision). This partnership tells us that Bungie's games will, for the next 10 years, be published by Activision exclusively. Q: The Activision partnership was created in 2010. Why didn't it have any bearing on Halo: Reach? A: Because Microsoft owns all copyrights to Halo, not Bungie and not Activision. More on this later.
FAQ: Bungie is hiring for the PS3
Q: Why is Bungie hiring for the PS3? A: Play Station 3, like the Xbox360, is an extremely popular gaming station enjoyed all over the world. Bungie wants more people to buy, play, and enjoy their games. And now that Microsoft no longer holds any bearing over Bungie, they no longer have to make Xbox or Xbox360 games exclusively. They're hiring because they need people who know how to work a PS3! Q: Why is Bungie leaving Xbox? A: They're not. Bungie's next game is going to be multi-platform, which means it will be released non exclusive for any gaming system. Bungie's next game will be released for the Xbox360, Play Station 3, and possibly the PC. Q: Will Bungie ever make a PS3-only game? A: That is highly unlikely. Activision does not bear exclusive to any console, so the notion that Bungie would is, at this moment, a ludicrous statement.
FAQ on Bungie's new IP
Q: What the hell is an IP? A: Basically, Bungie's new game. Intellectual property, often referred as an IP, is a term referring to a number of distinct types of creations of the mind for which a set of exclusive rights are recognized. Q: What will Bungie's new IP be? A: We don't know yet. Most information is either a hypothesis or not solid. We know it will be a game. As of now, our closest hint is Bungie Aerospace. Q: What is Bungie Aerospace? A: http://bungieaerospace.com/ That is all we have as of now. It is officially by Bungie, and for now it is uncertain if Aerospace will be Bungie's next game, or if the website is just a promotion tool. Q: Per Audacia Ad Astra? What? A: It's slogan, Per Audacia Ad Astra, is Latin. Direct Latin translation is shaky, but basically it says "To the stars through audacity". Q: Will Bungie's next game be a Halo game? A: No. Bungie is no longer making any Halo games. Halo is Microsoft's IP, not Bungie's. Therefore, Bungie can't make a Halo game even if they wanted to.
FAQ on 343 Industries and the future of Halo
Q: What is 343 Industries? A: 343 Industries is a developer owned by Microsoft studios that has been created exclusively for releasing Halo content. Halo now as its own official site ru by 343, http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/. Q: Are they making a new Halo game? A: Eventually, yes. But for now, 343i seems quite content with creating new content such as books, animated series', and DLC for Halo: Reach. Their is no official timeframe for when we should expect a new Halo game. Q: What about Bnet? All the stats for my Halo prowess? A: Currently, and for the foreseeable future, Bungie will continue to house stats and files for Halo: Reach, Halo ODST, and Halo 3. They will also continue to update and maintain Halo: Reach with playlist updates, as well as moderate the game. But at this moment, that's it. Eventually, (this could be years from now, there is no official timeframe) Halo will be entirely in the hands on 343i. It will be a slow transition at a snails pace. You won't log onto Bnet one day to see all your stats gone.
Conclusion
I hope this FAQ proved useful. If not, I would greatly appreciate feedback. And if it did help you or you didn't need this thread's help, please, help me add to it! Let's make this the biggest hub for the subject! Let's come together as a community, and help each other! Thank you for the support! - MegaMuffin16 [Edited on 04.17.2011 5:24 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Alex the Awesome
Posted by: paulmarv Nice thread, but can you please fix your faulty Latin translation? I am really bottling up how frustrated I am over seeing this simple sentence constantly mistranslated in these forums. I've said this many times: "To boldly reach the stars" is incorrect (bad English grammar anyways with a split infinitive). It is "To the stars through audacity". If you dispute this, I can search for and link you to a full incontrovertible grammatical breakdown of it I posted a while back when I was about to shoot myself in the foot over the frustration I was experiencing about this whole confusion. Thanks for this FAQ; it is informative and serves to simplify a complex situation. P.S. There's also another English grammar error in your explanation: "It's" should be "Its" since you do not mean to say "It is slogan..."
Frustrated over a dead language... good job! EDIT: Oh and I am completely aware of Bungie's love for Latin. Just do not get frustrated? The internet is not a reliable source of information and that is how the translation has been mucked up by people. Not their fault, it's those shady translators like Google and such. EDIT2: it seems quite a lot of websites say the translation you claim is wrong, is right. Heck I think Urk once said the one you say is wrong is actually the correct one. Do you have any kind of University diploma/degree/major in Latin?
My qualifications in the language are irrelevant since this is an anonymous forum and I have no way of proving myself. What I can prove, and will now do in this post, is that the translation I proposed is correct and the other one wrong. First of all, there is the difference between a literal and general translation. Latin is an old language (not a "dead" language - at least not "dead" to many) and Romans did not speak the way we do. If you were to translate every word verbatim, it would often sound weird. In this case, however, the meaning is best retained with a literal translation. There is little ambiguity in the Latin that has been put forward. "To boldly reach the stars" is incorrect for a number of reasons. "To reach" is an infinitive phrase - there are no infinitives or even verbs in the Latin "Per audacia ad astra". "Boldly" is an adverb - not found anywhere in the Latin. The only word that implies motion is "ad", but to supplant the standard translation of "to" with "reach" is very imaginative, especially when a more orthodox translation is already present. Now, to defend the proper translation, allow me to break down the sentence word for word. "Per" = Preposition, meaning "Through" in this case. Source. Its objects take on the Accusative case. "Audacia" = There are two ways that this word could be construed. The more standard way would be the noun "audacia, ae, f." (Source) which means, in this sense, boldness, courage, and audacity. However, the noun, being the object of the preposition "per", must take on the accusative case. The accusative singular of "audacia" is "audaciam", which clearly is not the Latin that Bungie supplied. The first possibility is that they made a mistake, and either did not decline the noun for grammatical function at all, or erroneously believed "per" to take the Ablative case. (Many prepositions take on the Ablative; it is almost without exception Accusative or Ablative) The word "audacia" is both the un-declined Nominative case, in the event of the former error that I mentioned, and the Ablative case, in the event of the latter error I mentioned. There is a second possible form of the word "audacia" that does make grammatical sense. The adjectival form of the word is "audax, audacis, all genders" (Source). Knowing how to decline third-declension I-stem adjectives, I know that the neuter plural inflections are also "audacia" for both the Nominative and Accusative cases, as are almost always the Nominative and Accusative endings coequal in the Neuter gender in Latin. Therefore, "audacia" could very well be the plural accusative of the adjectival form of the noun, meaning "bold, daring, and audacious". The obvious problem, however, is that this adjective modifies no noun. Unlike in English, Latin authors regularly omit the noun objects of adjectives. This is something that someone with much less experience in the language than I is taught. In Latin, when an adjective is by itself, it usually is translated as "men" or "deeds" or even "things". The gender is not Masculine, so it is not "men". The grammar and context is most obviously in reference to "deeds". Therefore, it is seen that the prepositional phrase "Per audacia" is properly translated as "Through audacity", or better yet, like a true Roman would have said, "Through audacious deeds". You could supplant "audacious" with "bold" or "daring" - it is the same meaning that the word conveys. Latin has a very economic vocabulary. "Ad" = Preposition, meaning "to" or "toward". It implies motion, especially since it takes the Accusative. Source. (In Latin, the Accusative case often signifies motion.) "Astra" = Noun, meaning "stars". It is the accusative plural of "Astrum, i, n." (Source). Deriving from the similar Greek work "astron", it is the more poetic version of the word for "star", the other being the more scientific term "stella, ae, f.". In light of the analysis above, the proper translation is "To the stars through audacity". (In Latin, the order of the words is irrelevant and I switched the two clauses to sound more like English, however the original order is just as correct.) Better yet, you could translate it as actual Latin poetry and really capture the meaning with "To the stars through audacious deeds". The more poetic meaning of "astra" that I mentioned helps convey not only this literal translation but the symbolic and deeper meaning of the phrase as well. It means that Bungie will achieve great things ("go to the stars" - stars are up high and in the heavens) (Many Roman authors also used this, read more about this expression here) through boldness, daring, and audacity, rising above everyone else. This is corroborated by the known meaning of the common Latin phrase "Per aspera ad astra" (Source), to which Bungie's motto is an obvious allusion. The bottom line is that "To boldy go the the stars" is wrong and that "To the stars through audacious deeds" is the best way to capture the meaning. Quod erat demonstrandum.

 • You really need to fix a 343i FAQ. They just released info on Halo 4 at E3. Maybe link the trailer in the answer when you mention Halo 4. Also mention Halo CEA as 343i is releasing this, too. There are a few (2?) pictures of it. If needed I could maybe find them for you.

 • I WAS very concerned about bungie jumping into bed with activision (concerning what happened to IW, make someone a billion dollars and they'll fire your ass so they can also keep your bonus) But from what i heard, bungie hammered out a contract that lets them keep every ounce of their creative and scheduling independence, which is very good. I would trust bungie to be astute about the whole thing. It still sort of feels like theyre sort of playing with fire though...

 •
Posted by: o Solace So this means that neither anyone in the whole Bungie company will not make any new "Halo" games? And 343 is making Halo games.. So that means no Halo for PS3? Halo 3 didn't end it all.. If Bungie stopped here, I would hang myself xD
That's right. While Bungie is moving on to make multi platform games, Halo is still firmly in the grip of Microsoft. So Halo will remain an Xbox 360 exclusive.
