Hey community. Today, April 14th, marks the fourth year since the Halo 2 servers were taken offline. I can't believe it's been so long, it seems like just yesterday I was playing swords and snipes on Lockout or phantom pistols on Waterworks (lol). So much has changed in my life since then, but one thing that will never change is my love for this game. Halo CE and Halo 2 basically sum up my childhood, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I met my best friends through Halo 2 lan parties, and if it wasn't for Halo I would have never been a part of this awesome community of gamers. I've been planning on bringing this thread back to life on the 3 year anniversary as soon as I learned that old threads are no longer archived on Bungie.next. The final few Halo 2 players are an example of why the Bungie community is so amazing. The last two Halo 2 players to ever play on Xbox Live, APACHE N4SIR and I, were both kicked offline on May 10, 2010, after keeping our Xboxes on for 26 days. We did this for no other reason than to show our love for Halo 2, and to make sure it went out with a bang. I wanted to bring this thread back to life so the Bungie community, new users and grizzled ancients alike, could be reminded why we're here. When Bungie created Halo 2, they also created a whole new era of online gaming. Although Bungie has moved on from Halo, I think we all still have so much to look forward to. As we keep moving forward towards Destiny, we need to remember what brought us here in the first place. The Bungie.net community is special, and we will remain awesome until the end of time. Thank you Bungie for the hours and hours of joy and entertainment you have brought to so many people.
The original thread is posted below, completely unaltered from three years ago. I hope it brings back some good memories and lots of nostalgia. Thanks guys!
As all of you know, the Xbox Live servers were shut down for all Xbox original games on April 14, 2010. A small, dedicated group of Halo 2 players didn't agree with this, and would not let the game die. As long as we didn't shut off our Xboxes, or lose connection in any way, we would still be able to play Halo 2. At first there were over 500 people that had kept their Xboxes on after the servers were shut down, but that quickly decreased to less than 100. Many players lagged out, and some players Xboxes actually overheated. We were able to keep Halo 2 alive for nearly 1 month longer than it should have been. You may ask why we did this. Everyone has their own reason, but mostly it was for the love, and memory of Halo 2. For some, it was to show the disapproval to Microsoft, for shutting off Halo 2 so we could have more friends on our friends list. (Which is apparently why they shut down the servers, and that update still hasn't happened!) A lot of us became really good friends. For a while, we had 'T0 Be Continued' live streaming all of our games, until her xbox regrettably froze while playing custom games. Then, 'Mr7ankjump' did a live stream, but he lagged out only 4 hours later. 'Z0mbie Stench' was doing a live stream every day after those 2 lagged out, but sadly she was kicked off because of connection trouble. XXBooker DXX was the final live streamer. I would like to thank everyone who followed our story, all of your support really inspired us to stay on as long as possible. Also, I would like to thank all of the Final Few, you guys are awesome and it was an honor playing with you. Also, I would like to thank GamesRadar.com for giving out F&F beta codes for the final 12. There are no longer any Halo 2 players online.
