It's like a Cycle

When I say a Cycle I am talking about the Bungie community itself. I will be honest, I don't come as often anymore. However when I do it seems like the only thing that ever is changing is the graphics of the website itself. The community always seems to stay the same. Same people, same events, same groups, same threads, same questions, same memes, same policies, and the list may go on. I know that this is one of the reasons I tend not to visit as often, because well. It seems like nothing interesting happens much. I see the same "known" community members always here, as if they never get less satisfied of the activities and bored of things. It is almost as if they are always finding something within the semi-limited resources available to make something of it. Even though in my opinion the reality is it is still the same. I really don't see much new, is it that most active members participating actively within this community just wanting to help? Are you guys here to become known and make friends with the other community members here? Or do you have no general reason but just come and become part of the cycle? Things seem to be slowing as well too. And my main reason for still coming here is mainly unknown, I guess a little of just wandering and reading things but never participating. It seems like I used to be here all the time posting and participating, and now I read the Bungie Blog and that is about it. Sure I know alot of you come here because you love the game and the atmosphere of the developers, people, and the community itself. And I agree with that too, and I assume that is another reason I wander here. But I have a question for the members here that are always actively participating, that have been here for awhile, and well appear to not notice the cycling events and such. Have you guys ever even got bored of the community, do you notice what I view as this cycling community? And if you do why and what do you do to stop yourself from drifting away? Or what is it that stops you? I always find myself drifting away because nothing catches my interest, and nothing seems to be new and exciting enough to be worth getting involved and participating in. I understand that this is a strong matter of my opinion too. I'm tempted to say I would like things within the community to change but I don't know how or what would be satisfying and how it would be changed. I don't know why I made this thread either... randomness

 • I do find my self spending less and less time on the Public Forums and more on other Community sites and Private groups. It seems to be more enjoyable in other places, You can talk to the Admins/Mods and feel like a Community, Instead of just another Forum User. I don't stay to get noticed more in the community, I stay to keep up with everyone, See whats happening around the Bungie and Halo Communities. Something needs to happen, Something new,Something fresh. But what?

 • It'll get worse before it gets better, but It will get better. Trust me though, the more you point it out, the more everyone will start to despise you. Not because you're wrong, quite the opposite.

 • I find The Septagon still fun, active, and enjoyable as much as I used to many months ago. Yes, it has slowed a bit, and the same members still post here actively (including some new ones), but I still love it here. I don't post on many (barely any) other forum websites, so that may be a big factor of my statement.

 • There seems to be an irritating recurring theme where someone will appear out of nowhere with what appears to be innocent intentions simply to improve the community, and then you can see clearly through them when someone asks for - let's say for example - a recap of what's been going on with something they started doing, or suggested, and then the said person will end up self-referencing to an extent that becomes awfully unsightly. For what? I've no idea, but there's appearing to be a steady decline of actual cool folk, and an exponential increase of attention-seeking people who have their own interests at heart. But yes, the forums do go through a cycle, and the only way to stop the cycle is to get a new bike.

 • I don't come much to this forum anymore either. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but there's nothing new nor of replayable value. Edit: And SJ, they are bicycles, so you would be getting an extra pair. [Edited on 04.26.2009 4:20 PM PDT]

 • "All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again." It's not like it's not obvious... at least to those who post often, I believe. I've known it since about September of '08, which is about 2 months after my return to public posting after my "year of reclusiveness". People don't have very much new to talk about. But that's not what makes it bad, no. That's what makes it good. Consider, for a moment, if every topic made was fresh, new, and completely revolutionary? Not only would it be a curse to miss a single topic posted, nobody would be able to stand out, since everybody's ideas are revolutionary. It would be a sea of new, a see of equality... just because every thread and idea would be new and different, every user would exist in a sea of the same. No, the repetitive nature is what keeps all the forums balanced and sane. Users pick out their favorite topics and post. So what if it's repetitive, new ideas can come from repetitive ideas! So what if it's been discussed before, let's let new users or new posters see it! So what if they're forum copping, at least it's because they know what they're talking about! All of this is the nature of a forum. I post in the Halo 3 Forum and the Community forum now instead of just the Community like before because the Community got old. I had to expand my horizons. Whenever you feel like it's repetitive, start posting in a new forum full-time. Branch out, but do it at your own pace. Stick to forums you like at first, and when they get old start spending more time in new forums. Things will snap back into place, and you might just figure out you really love some of the forums you've been neglecting. The truest, truest joy in any forum is seeing a truly revolutionary idea. It's what I wait for, and sometimes what I produce. Wonder why I so rarely make threads? I wait until I've got gold, or what I think is gold, then I post that gold. Don't focus on the noise, especially the noise you don't like. Focus on trying to find that nugget in the river, that glint. That's where you find your enjoyment. And that's why I post; because of the people who produce that glint, and because of that glint itself.

 • Its true, it is a pretty boring place most of the time, and especially when users that don't regular this board start posting threads that we have already had major discussions over i get even more turned off, so i mostly just post in the flood usually, or I just wont post at all, if it seems there isn't really anything to satisfy. • I still enjoy it. I enjoy watching this place grow and change like roots beneath a tree. Sure watching roots grow may be boring to some, but to others it's like listening to a new melody with every twist and turn.

 •
Posted by: Lord Snakie Wall O' Text
I pretty much a agree with what Snakie said, the repetitive-ness kind of evolves as issues are brought up which, in turn, brings out new discussion and points of view. I'll add by saying that things are slow because we're in between games right now, but I often find that it's times like these that some of the deepest discussions are had and we become an even closer community. Repetitiveness, while it can be mildly annoying, is a function of these forums (and just about every other internet forum) that will never leave. If you can't beat them, you might as well join them (or at least tolerate them)

Kids these days eh?
Don't start, not today. He has a valid argument, best read before shooting him down.
What argument? It's a statement of the obvious. The forums go through cycles, and people get bored and leave. The thread will ramble on for a few pages with time-honored comments like, "I concur wholeheartedly" "It's actually fresh and exciting" "Bond. James Bond" "Back in my day, people posted this too" "In my experience here, it was such and such" "You're gonna need a bigger boat" "Then, on the fourth day, he roped himself a couple of sea turtles, lashed 'em together and made a raft. " So really, not only has this all happened before, it will probably happen again.

 • Whether you do or do not play Halo 3, I think the main reason for all the stale-ness is no "new" projects are on the forsee-able horizon. (ODST does not count as bonafide "new") When the hysteria that was Halo 3 was coming to a head, things were fresh and exciting because something new and big was on the horizon. With no new or big stuff coming up, it is what it is. And for everyone that is going to post that it was 'better' here before Halo 3 before reading this far....well for a very short time it might have been, but it was beginning to get stale at that point too. When/if Bungie announces their next new/big secret projsct... this place is going to explode. Right now, B.net is like a vacation village in the off season, what till 'summer' comes around again. It will get more exciting for sure.

Even with the release of Halo 3 and it being slightly old already, the Halo 3 Forum has exploded with activity every second of the day. When Bungie releases their next big project (which might not even be a video game), this forum will not explode as The Septagon for the website itself. If Bungie makes a certain thread only for their next project, that forum will explode.

 • Just wait until summer rolls around. I know I'm not as active because of final exam prep, more work, etc. Then, on the fourth day, he roped himself a couple of sea turtles, lashed 'em together and made a raft.

 • Bungie.net is the gateway to a huge set of other communities. Some people will stay around while others move on to other groups/sites and find other people who share their interests. That being said it does mean that since we are the main depot for new arrivals to the scene we will have the same cycles over and over again. It is the way of life around here. My advice is to move onto somewhere else and stop back by every now and then to see whats up. It is better than getting burned out here and leaving forever.

 • Cycles are always subject to change, and given time as a factor, every cycle ends. I happen to still enjoy my time on the site and would say that the community is anything but predictable, but that's just from my experience and opinion. If you're not liking the cycle, perhaps you would (or should) visit different sites or have a different experience elsewhere. Bungie.net is like life. When you're young you view things much differently than when you are older. When you get older, you get sick of things or think things should change. It's natural. Sure, things my be recuring or one of the same threads may be repeated, but that's what time is about. Everything can change though. And dude, you're gonna need a bigger boat.
