Before you start reading this is NOT another post asking to have it put in as a heavy weapon :) but I mean....you could totally do that too.
What this is *hopefully* is a post about how to improve destiny going forward. As we alllll know destiny has received mixed reviews. After reading a ton of them and logging a disgusting amount of time into this game I've clearly had my own positive and negative thoughts. This game has problems and I think at this point even the fans accept that. Lack of socialization, weak story, lack of in game lore...blah blah blah. The stuff has been said a million times. So I'll get to the point. For me I figured out the most disappointing part. The repetitive missions and strikes.
In a game that on the pve side is about repeating the same content over and over this is, in my humble opinion, one of the biggest issues. It's made me cringe more than any other aspect of this game.
I began to wonder why. It's not because of the grind. I've played just about every mmo to hit the scene for the last 10 years so I'm no stranger to that. It's not the basic game play. If anything that's the strongest part of game. The true issues is simple. Every darn misson and strike is the same thing.
Go here, kill guys. Go here, 'defend' the imp. Go here, kill bullet boring bullet sponge boss. You never feel like you're doing anything new or engaging.
So what does this have to do with the sword of crota misson? It's simple. It's the only misson I can think of that I played and absolutely loved for the mission itself. At first I figured it was because I got to swing a evil sword at a pile of hive dudes but I thought about it more and it hit me that this is the only misson I can think of that truly changes up the basic game play in a meaningful way. You get to do something new and unique to this game. Is it some leap of video gaming technology? Hell no, but it's fun and it pulls you in.
I can't even begin to tell you how important that is in a game that is at its core about grinding. What if every mission and strike had something like that? turret sections, REAL defence sections, meaningful vehicle sections, timed escapes and of course more fun weapons. These are just few ideas I've had.
Of course bosses with actual engaging and interesting mechanics would help a ton. Every boss in wow was at least a little different and end game. if you didn't know the fight you figured it out quick or died and that in and of it self was engaging.
Anywho, I really hope going forward we see more missions with unique mechanics. Most of us are past the story. If it was amazing that would have been great but either way we all would be past it by now. At this point gearing up and the game play is what keeps us going. I think that adding new and interesting mechanics to both the missions and the strikes could do more to extend the life of this game than any other single act. Most people don't mind doing the same thing over and over as long as that thing is fun ;)

Stoped reading after lack of lore. Destiny has one the best universes ever written. You just have to go a little out of your way to read it. Like grimoire cards, listening to people talk and general world lore.

Holy shit, the post date. TWO THOUSAND FOURTEEN.
-
If everything is unique, nothing is
-
They should add a jumping puzzle to the start screen, you can't play until you've beaten that days jumping puzzle. Lol honestly though, ppl need to learn how to jump, its rudimentary.
-
Cuz it's long?

So far I have found two turrets in strikes that I have not see before or since. One was in undying mind strike, the second was in the valus one. Both were place able like the beacons in the cayde mission. I haven't seen them since :(

The unique mechanics are the problem They stifle gameplay variety People figure out which tactic works best and quickest on the raid and then do it over and over and over Then they publish a YouTube video, which other people watch and then those people run the raid the exact same way over and over again And since mistakes are generally punished with a team wipe creative thinking and game play are punished And ultimately fun is punished Caveat here that I have not done KF so if it's different the my bad I guess, but it sounds pretty similar to the broad strokes of the first two raids
-
Would be nice to see strikes as mini raids. Something you can do without a mic but basic teamwork needed and waypoints to help them.
-
^this. It will never happen tho.
-
This is still alive?
-
And then it's used to make our own.

Bearbeitet von BruisingEmu: 10/5/2014 10:52:02 AMI'm starting to think about how old Halo levels were broken up in great segments with warthog runs. Different enemies and equipment. Different ways to fight each enemy. (Hunters were always a game-changer) To this day. I would do a 4-man co-op of Halo 3 campaign, or a 2-man or Halo 2. At the drop of a hat. No questions asked. Not only that but they had super memorable parts of the campaigns. I still have trouble believing the company that made that series failed at delivering some of the key mechanics they were known for. There's a lot here in this. Honestly, I think you can tell that they put heart into this, and tried. There's a lot of lore and ideas hidden in the grimoire cards. There's all the unused areas of map when you patrol. I can't help but think there's all these cool things they wanted to do but couldn't. Something must've gone wrong somewhere. I dunno what though. The Raid had a lot of this diversity I was hoping for. Portals. Oracles. Supplicants. Sync Plates. TIMES VENGEANCE. A vision debuff. Fanatics. Relic Shield. Ritual of Negation. Like. WHERE ARE ANY OF THESE MECHANICS IN THE REST OF THE GAME? I like the game and will continue to play (The Raid gives me hope). I think it will improve it small amounts as time passes. It might be a really good game in a few months. Hopefully this is true.

How about why we cant use all exotics for 6 slots for pve? Why would tower want to handicap guardians. Weaksauce
-
Hell if they made the ghost defense parts so that you really had to defend the ghost or you lost, that would at least build some tension that we could remember.

Necrobump bump

Thats why raids are awesome. The bosses actually dont have much health you just have to do special things to damage them.

Just one thing about the story. I feel like the reason everyone thinks the story sucks is the fact that you almost get to choose your own campaign order. I just learned this, so if anyone this is for the people that don't. On the story selection (or maybe map. I don't know. When you click on a planet and a bunch of missions come up). The main missions are the mission the missions that are big, and have a little Olympic wreath. Destined story still sucks though, even if you play it correctly. Tl Dr big story missions = part of story Small story missions = side quest Sword of Croat = side quest The dark beyond and chamber of night = story
-
True. Just looking at mission structure throughout the Halo Series shows that Bungie took this easy route with Destiny. Arguably, "Become Legend" is more relevant to Halo than it is Destiny.

The mechanics of the mission were nice, but it pointed to a huge flaw with the game. We never learn anything about it. Its just "oh hey here is a mysteriously powerful sword go kill people" and oh by the way it was used against us during the last great war. Ummm ok??? Thanks Dink-bot! That wasn't helpful at all!

Agreed, the bosses feel like they were designed for a strategy game and the unique mechanic of the sword made sword of crota without a doubt one of the most memorable missions in destiny. Their needs to be more missions with unique elements, like one that you hijack a cabal siege tank, or lose your guns and have to use the enemies, you get the point. I think that they should also add lvl 20+ patrol missions and have random dungeons, just short in and out places where you go in kill a boss and leave trough another exit, it would make exploring a lot more fun as you didnt know if the cave you were about to enter was just a small cave or a dungeon.
-
I agree! The Sword of Crota is by far my favourite story mission, and I get excited whenever a daily mission or bounty points to it, because the sword is just so much freakin fun! It completely changes the class, your abilities, and how you approach the enemies, as well as showing the potential for melee combat. The artifacts in the Raid do the same thing. I LOVE just smashing everything to bits with a huge scary Hive sword

Bearbeitet von Marathon: 10/16/2014 2:28:06 PMI said it before and I'll say it again: CAPTURE AND HOLD SWORD OF CROTA game mode. Like oddball. Could make it team based and FFA. Bungie also needs to make a dogfighting mode with the ships, and a racing mode with the hover bikes. Now that's variety in the crucible... BTW, what happened to capture the flag? Edit: Forgot to mention a mission with a space battle. That will easily make it possible to make a pvp game mode out of it. One can only dream to see this in destiny 2.
