Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter are some of my all time favourite games and it’s time to pay little homage to another of Bungie’s Greatest Hits. This howto intends to assist the reader in getting a copy of Myth, and getting the most out of the experience. However, I am not a fountain of myth lore by any standards – I would appreciate any assistance, pointers, corrections and help that you guys can give.

This Guide is broken into 8 sections, and due to the character limits enforced on posts, I’ve had to place each chapter in their own post. The chapters are:

1. Overview and History of Myth
2. Getting a Copy of Myth II
3. Installing Myth II
4. Myth: TFL in Myth II
5. Myth Online
6. Fear, Loathing and Myth Plugins
7. Myth III
8. Myth Links

1. Overview and History of Myth
Who better to explain what Myth is, then Bungie? Here is the gist of it:
Myth is a Real Time Tactical game, where troop placement and movement means more then numbers and unit strengths. There is no building, no unit trading or resource management (other then the wellbeing of your army, and the ammo they hold). Myth is all about the battle, the strategy and the skill that will win the day, as apposed to the gameplay of “I can build more farms then you! PWN3D!” that many RTS suffer from.

The single player campaign has a rich plot, with story that rivals marathon in many respects. It is a fantasy world, in an age similar to the Lord of The Rings, with a endless battle between good and evil. As always, Bungie have made a solo campaign that is keeps you interested, and wanting more. The detail in the levels, the humour and the story tidbits that you glean from evert have kept this game alive for so long. As always, keep your eye out for the easter eggs and references to books and movies.

The multiplayer component is where Myth really shines. Rooms, rankings, game types and orders – it’s all there. Many hours can be spent playing co-op games, improving your rank or testing your skills in the various plugins that are played online. Team vs team games are not uncommon, and can lead to the most frantic games you’ll see.

If you would like a taste of what it’s all about, the Mac demo of Myth II: Soulblighter can be found at http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=10222, the PC demo at http://downloads.gamezone.com/demos/d1872.htm or http://gr.bolt.com/download/pc/strategy/myth2_soulblighter.ht m. If these links aren’t good, then a google search will find them. Note that these demos do not contain any updates or the ability to connect to the newer game servers.

When Bungie joined forces with Microsoft, they sold the rights to Myth and Oni to Take 2 Interactive, who went on to make Myth III.

2. Getting a Copy of Myth II
If you wish to play Myth: TFL and Myth II, your best bet is to find a copy of Myth II: Soulblighter. As the more recient of the two, it will be easier to find, has a better engine, more plugins, and best of all, you can download the Myth: TFL solo campaign for free.

Myth II is too old to be found on the shelves of your local game store, so look in the bargain bin, or on ebay. Myth is also available in other packages as well: Bungie released a CD with Myth:TFL, Myth II and Chimera (a third party addon) called Myth Total Codex, and would be another good one to search for in your quest to get a copy of the game. Recently (well, a few years ago), Take 2 Interactive have released a package called Myth II: Worlds, that contains the games plus many popular plugins and tools. Internet searches might uncover shops that still sell it, so good luck hunting!

3. Installing Myth II

Windows:
Insert the Myth II CD in your CD drive, and install it as in the manual. The installer is like any other standard windows install, so do as you would any other game. If, at the end of the install, it complains that service pack 3 is required for NT, use alt+ctrl+del to kill the installer. Myth II will be installed, and will run fine anyway (unless of course you *are* trying to install Myth II on NT, then use service pack 3!). Note that if you had to kill the installer process, you will need to add shortcuts to your start menu yourself if you want them.

Once the installation is complete, download and run the latest windows patch for Myth II from http://projectmagma.net/sb_downloads.shtml, following the prompts.

Mac OS 9:
To install Myth II on a Macintosh running OS 9 or earlier, insert the CD, double click on the Myth II Installer and follow the prompts. Once it is installed, download the and run the Mac Classic updater for Myth II from http://projectmagma.net/sb_downloads.shtml, following the prompts.

Mac OS X:
Firstly, you need to download the latest update to Myth II from project magma (1.5 is current). It includes an installer for OS X: http://projectmagma.net/sb_downloads.shtml.

Uncompress the update and mount the disk image, then launch the Myth II installer.mpkg. Insert your Myth II CD when asked, following the prompts. Myth II will install to the /Applications/Myth II folder.

An alternative is to Copy the Myth II f folder onto your hard drive, then copy the following folders and programs into the new Myth II f folder on your HD: tags, cutscenes, Tool Docs, fear and loathing. Then run the myth II 1.5 updater.pkg to update it to the latest version.

Note to Mac Users: I will sometimes refer to directory in this guide, its the same as a folder.

Congratulations – you have successfully installed Myth II. When you fire it up for the first time, I suggest you go into the preferences, turn on OpenGL or Direct3D, turn on 3D fog (it looks cool), turn up the Screen Resolution, hit OK then check out the tutorial for some pointers on how to play Myth.

4. Myth: TFL in Myth II
The easiest way to play Myth: TFL is to download the plugin for Myth II http://projectmagma.net/tfl_solo.shtml. Once the download is complete, uncompress it, and copy the file Magma - The Fallen Levels v2 into your Myth II plugins directory, eg C:\games\Myth II\plugins or /Aplications/Myth II/plugins.

Then, fire up Myth II and choose New Game. The New Game dialog will appear: click on the Plugins button, select “Magma – The Fallen Levels” from the inactive list, click on the right arrow button to place it in the active list then choose OK. This will take you back to the New Game dialog. Click on the “TFL Gameplay” check box, then choose the “Training Map” if you wish to do the Myth: TFL tutorial, or choose “Crow’s Bridge” to start playing Myth:TFL straight away. Remember to click on the “TFL Gameplay” check box, to make sure the game uses TFL physics and gameplay.

If you wish to start playing from any level, hold down shift while you click on New Game. You can now select any level, even ones you haven’t finished yet.

Sadly, the Myth: TFL plugin does not include the cutscenes, if you want to watch them, you will need to download them seperately from a hotline server. More details can be found in the following url: http://www.playmyth.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=News& amp;file=article&sid=391&mode=thread&order=0& thold=0 Thanks TheElusiveMind.

5. Myth Online
In the world before 2002, bungie.net was another word for Myth Online Multiplayer Goodness, but in fateful year, the myth server was shut down. However, bungie never lets a good thing die, and they released the source to the server to the world. Now there are two places for myth players to go: PlayMyth and MariusNet. Note that for both servers, you will need to install a plugin and register an account to play.

PlayMyth
Firstly, you will need to register an account. Go to http://playmyth.net/user.php?op=register&module=NS-NewUse r and join up (make a note of your username and password). Note that you will need a valid non-free email account to do this. If you have any problems making an account, you should contact playmyth – no one on these forums or Bungie can help you with this.

Once you have an account set up, you will need to install the PlayMyth plugins (Note that with the OSX installer of Myth II this will be done for you if you choose). In your Myth II directory, you will find a metaservers directory this contains the plugins required to connect to PlayMyth. Copy the contents of the PlayMyth Classic directory into the plugins directory in your Myth II directory.

eg Windows:
In c:\games\Myth II\metaservers\PlayMyth Classic there are two files, PlayMyth v1.2.1 and PMI_Classic. Copy the files to c:\Myth II\plugins

eg Mac OS X:
In /Applications/Myth II/metaservers/PlayMyth Classic there are two files, PlayMyth v1.2.1 and PMI_Classic.Copy the files to /Applications/Myth II/plugins

Now all you need to do is launch Myth II, choose Multiplayer Game, pick a player name, a team name, an icon and colours, enter your PlayMyth username and password and away you go!

MariusNet

I haven’t used MariusNet, but I assume the process is much the same as PlayMyth. You can register at the following url: http://www.mariusnet.com/registration.php (make a note of your username and password). Note that you will need a valid non-free email account to do this. If you have any problems making an account, you should contact marius.net – no one on these forums or bungie can help you with this.

Once you have an account set up, you will need to install the MariusNet plugins (Note that with the OSX installer of Myth II this will be done for you if you choose). In your Myth II directory, you will find a metaservers directory this contains the plugins required to connect to MariusNet. Copy the contents of the MariusNet directory into the plugins directory in your Myth II directory.

eg Windows:
In C:\games\Myth II\metaservers\MariusNet there are is a file, Patch MariusNet - copy it to to C:\Myth II\plugins

eg Mac OS X:
In /Applications/Myth II/metaservers/MariusNet there is a file, Patch MariusNet - copy it to /Applications/Myth II/plugins

Now all you need to do is launch Myth II, choose Multiplayer Game, pick a player name, a team name, an icon and colours, enter your MariusNet username and password and away you go!

Tips on playing Myth Online

1. Find a room with games you are interested in. Ranked rooms are for ranked games, coop games or friendly matches will be in unranked rooms.
2. Games shaded out are in play, you can only join a server if it is waiting for players.
3. Games coloured in red require plugins you do not have installed. Ask around and you can find them.
4. If you are playing in a team game, and don’t wish to be team captain, ask a player to let you join them. If you are happy to be a team captain, learn to unit trade – there are common loadouts for each level.
5. Don’t quit a game if you are loosing – it is bad form. Be gracious and commend the other players (most people use “gg” – good game).
6. If you don’t know something – ask. There are always people willing to help out.

6. Fear, Loathing and Myth Plugins
One of the reasons why Bungie’s games last for so long is because they are so easy to alter, modify and customise - Myth is no exception. When Bungie placed the editors on the Myth II CD, and community went wild. Fear is used to edit the tags (graphics, sounds, physics and other game items) while loathing is used to make, script and populate the levels.

Alterations to Myth are called plugins – there are many on the Internet, taking Myth in directions even Bungie wouldn’t have thought of. Also, Project Magma have not only been bugfixing the Myth engine, they have also enhanced it, adding features like increased map limits, improved graphics, TFL physics and new coop maps. Here is some of the more popular mods and where to get them.

The Five Legends Play TFL through using only 5 heros.
Mazzarin's Demise IV A crazy co-op level, fun for many players. See how long you can survive.
Myth:TFL Multiplayer Map Pack Oldskool multiplayer maps.
Requiem of the Dead Another co-op map.
WW2 A total conversion set in WW2.
M4 An ambitious plugin to continue the myth story. Not yet complete but looking good!

7. Myth III
Myth III is a game I have not played, and as such is beyond the scope of this howto :P If someone wishes to write up a discussion on it, send it to me and I’ll add it in here.

Suffice to say that Myth III is set 1000 years or so before Myth: The Fallen Lords, and has many of the features and gameplay that exists in Myth I and II. It was written by MumboJumbo for Take 2 interactive.

And so, once again Myth is pushed back under the radar by all the Halo kiddies. Sorry to be bumping, but this guide really aught to be stickied. It is extremely well written, and would be of immense help to anyone looking into the Myth series. Smee obviously put a lot of work into it, and to let it just disappear would be a crying shame.

Do you not agree?

Very well done, Smee. I hope this re-kindles interest in Myth multiplayer. I can't speak for the PlayMyth servers (damn them to hell), but Marius is usually eerily quiet whenever I go there.

Good luck to all you people new to Myth in your quest to find the Holy Copy of Myth II in the Bargain Bin of Old-School Goodness™. :)

Agree, I can't enter the PlayMyth servers, so it's Mariusnet thats left for me, but nobody is there! Is there a myth group/chapter that we can join and set up matches and stuff? Myth@bungie.net the group is so inactive as it's possible to get!

I just re-installed Myth 2 yesterday night...and I am blown away, once again, by how GOOD that game is. I sat there for five minutes just listening to the music on the starting screen, and then I started a new game...and the commentary pulled me into the story line so nicely *sigh*. Can't wait until I go home today and start playing again.
I have decided to beat Myth 2 again before I start playing online, so it might be a few days before anyone sees me on there Playmyth.net..

How could I have ever abandoned Myth? How?! Boggles the mind, I tell you.

Oh yeah, hey everybody..I'm new here!
