Subject: Bungie 500 - Mongoose Racing Redefined - 31,000+ downloads

Works best with the Bungie 500 VIP Variant found here
.

Mongoose Racing. These two words can scatter members of a Custom Game party quicker than a few hundred zombie games. Players are allowed to stand in the goal area and get free points every 15 or 30 seconds, so why bother racing? Besides, the tracks aren't even laid out well enough to easily determine where to go--and avoiding short cuts while also following honor rules? Please.

After a lot of thought, effort, testing (why are you all so good at breaking maps), and a complete rebuild, a possible answer has emerged: The Bungie 500 (I figured they needed some props for the awesome Forge additions in Foundry, even if everyone seems to be growing weary of it already).

Map Description:

Originally designed as a floating oval track in the sky, several revisions have resulted from Forge, Foundry and VIP Variant limitations to produce what you see today.

The main things accomplished with this map are:
¤ No driveable shortcuts exist. Falling from the second level to the floor isn't possible except at the transition entering Turn 4. Falling into the Start/Finish line from the second floor isn't possible due to the man cannon placement.[/li]

¤ The racing line is clearly marked and intuitive.

¤ Crossing the Start/Finish line on foot teleports the player into a penalty box with fusion coils for him/her to commit suicide with (note that the VIP variant penalizes suicides with a single lap penalty and a 30-second respawn timer).

¤ Driving through the Start/Finish line multiple times without completing laps isn't possible due to the man cannon placement.

¤ Teleporters are available on the ground level to take you back to the starting area, should you be separated from your 'goose by an overzealous NASCAR fan. The only teleporters that place you in the penalty box are the four inside the Start/Finish line goal area.
VIP (Race) Variant Description: (download here)

¤ First player to complete 20 laps wins

¤ Suicides incur a 30 second respawn penalty and a one lap (-1 score) penalty. In conjunction with teleporters inside the Start/Finish line goal area, this prevents players from easily completing laps on foot.

¤ Killing VIPs incurs a one lap (-1 score) penalty.

¤ Players only inflict 25% of normal damage (lowest available above 0% to allow players to suicide when placed in the penalty box)

¤ Players have 200% damage resistance. With the 25% damage modifier, this makes griefing other players very hard (though not impossible) while still allowing penalty box suicides.

¤ There is a 15 minute round timer.

Picture Gallery (click on the links below to view pictures) -- These pictures do not contain the most recent updates to the map, but the changes are negligible for the overall track idea.

¤ Map Start: Racing up the ramp into the first turn.

¤ Turns 1 and 2 with the Penalty Box serving two uses as part of the wall.

¤ View of the first turn from behind the fence wall.

¤ View of turn 2 and the entry for turn 3 with the Start/Finish line and man cannon exit below.

¤ View of the 45° banked turn 3 over the starting area. The man cannons below the entrance to turn 3 do not affect the racing line.

¤ Reverse view of the entry to turn 3 and the start/finish area.

¤ View of turn 1 and the turn 3 exit going behind the man cannon retainment wall. The signs above the double fence wall are to prevent players from hitting multiple man cannons to take a short cut over the wall.

¤ View of how the turn 3 exit levels out from the 45° banking and begins downwards towards the bottom level of the track.

¤ The Start/Finish line: Man Cannons prevent players from driving through the goal area multiple times without completing another lap, or entering the goal area from the above level. Teleporters prevent players from going through the goal area on foot. The receiver node for these teleporters is in a penalty box, an upside-down fence-box between turns one and two with fusion coils inside for the player to commit suicide with.

¤ View of a player exiting the man cannons below two players racing on the upper level.

¤ Five players decided to cross the start/finish line at about the same time and are hurtling towards turn 1.

¤ View of the transition from turn 3 to the bottom level and turn 4. The teleporter visible on the inside of the turn takes players back to the starting area--just in case they are without a mongoose.

¤ Reverse view of the transition to the lower level. Early braking for the turn offers great passing opportunities here.

¤ Doriftu! View of turn 5 and the underbelly of the upper level. The teleporter visible on the inside of the turn also takes players back to the starting area.
Awards:

¤ Selected as ForgeHub's "Best Racetrack Map of 2007." (Click here to view thread)

¤ Featured in the March 2008 issue of EGM. Full details are still unknown, but it is one of five maps featured in a "Fun with Forge" article. The March 2008 issue is due to hit newsstands 2/12/08.

Hey man, I really liked playing this map with you. To the others out there looking at this, you really should give this a shot - even if you're not much into racing, it can be a lot of fun since it's simple and fast. Check it out.

This looks freakin' amazing. How on earth did you get those platforms curved like that? (I don't expect an answer, because that would give away your secret! :p) This really looks like a fun map, and it's probably the best looking Foundry map I've seen yet! I don't think any race track on any map could top this one. I can't wait to play it! Really nice work.

Halo 3 ftw

Nice :) This map is really fun.

It's really one of the easier things on the map, and I wouldn't mind showing you if you're really interested. Better Forge community = better Forge maps. :)

Glad you all are liking it, any feedback is welcome.

One of the better 'Goose racing tracks around.

I've been waiting for you to post this map. I hope it wasn't too annoying to have me driving around on it while you were finishing it. I remember that everything looked perfectly placed. It's rare to find a polished map like this one, too many sloppy ones out there. Unfortunately, my HaloBox is broken so I can't download this until Microsoft fixes it for me. I'm gonna save this thread until I get my 360 back, so please leave this up on your file share for a few weeks.

I just attempted to do a map like this with a group of friends. We failed at making a good way of counting laps. I tried setting the vip goal marker to 0.0 so that only 1 point would register as the vip passed through but when playing it no points registered. I have the gametype and map set in my queue and I'll check out how you did it in a bit. Looks great

REALLY COOL! Loved the geometry. Lots of fun to just drive around. Hope I can get a big custom group to try it out with the Bungie 500 game type!

I feel your pain. The original design for this map was a floating oval with banked turns, but the lap times were down to about 7-8 seconds when we figured out how to drive it really well. The quickest the VIP settings allow you to move the goal area is 10 seconds, so it wasn't always counting every lap. I also tried the zero width goal area and had it move on arrival, but driving through the zero width goal never registered. I tried turning the goal area at a 45° angle and floating it above the track so that only your head would go through it each lap, but it was still possible to get credit for multiple laps if you went through it slowly enough. The start/finish line design definitely consumed more of my time than anything else on this map.

Bungie would have saved me a lot of time and effort if the zero width goal areas actually triggered scoring. *nudge*

This map needs to make Bu.....(I won't say it... don't want to jinx you man.) But you know what I mean. This is definatley the best forging I have ever seen. I went through this yesterday just in forge mode and I had to have done at least 50 laps.

Awesome work! 5/5

I saw you made some small tweaks to this lately. Will we see a 2.0 version of this map? Even if you don't, make sure to edit the latest into your first post.

A good racing map. I like it because you aren't racing against the others in the room so much as you are trying to navigate the banked turn without falling off. It's less about speed and more about skill. The only suggestion I have is to consider some methods to counteract the tendency to flip—especially in the corner after the banked turn. Nice map!

Until I can do a partial rework, take heart in the fact that you can learn to drive the map very reliably without flipping in its current state. For the turn following the transition exiting the banked turn, sometimes you have to slow down to speed up. ;)

I appreciate the feedback though, the lower level (including transition) is definitely the weakest part of the map.

THIS TRACK IS SICK!!!

I would suggest making more of a "tunnel" after the VIP checkpoint so u don't end up falling off your 'goose.

Yeah, there will be a pretty big rework for it sometime after the new year. I think I can use the budget more wisely, and there are a few crazy things I want to give a try to save items (give me more walls, Bungie).

  • 12.23.2007 8:24 PM PST

Hope I'm not bumping excessively, but I thought you should get one more for passing a major milestone (500). Congrats man!

I hope your happy lol. I just wasted my last 2 free slots on your map! It better be good or else (I'll leave it at that).

Anyways, this looks awesome. Yes, this is the same Maelstrom from Forge Hub although I haven't posted on your thread there. Going to later.

I love some of the ideas you used. Do you mind if I copy the penalty box thing? It looks hilarious from what you were hoping to have people think. "30 seconds! Whoever thought of this is a dick".

Man, I love that.

Whenever I have a friend come over I have them try your map, and they all get addicted to it for like 45 minutes.
