I just saw this on kotaku this cant happen. If bungie leaves MS then they might make games for the PS3 and I would hate to see those dicks get anything this good.

At least partial shenanigans.

I'd say it is fake. MS owns Bungie. The only thing I could see happening is maybe a few Bungie employees are leaving and that is all.

I doubt they are leaving. Maybe they will finally tell us that Halo and Marathon are connected, Or they Bill Gates actually hates Halo!?

  • 10.01.2007 3:00 PM PST

MS should bury this rumor where it belongs, this backwater blog is getting exactly what it wanted...a ton of hits.

Kotaku reports this rumor. I read Kotaku, and I know Kotaku takes a very anti-Microsoft/Xbox 360 and pro-Sony/PS3 stance.

If it's not true, then Microsoft or Bungie needs to come out and debunk it...

Because this kind of rumor is not good for Microsoft's stock price.

yeah i was just over at n4g.com and its on there, this has to be bs, come on bungie debunk this rumor

  • 10.01.2007 3:23 PM PST

I have a feeling this is true. Considering when asked to comment both parties said nothing instead of saying "your high" I think it is true.

  • 10.01.2007 3:25 PM PST

Microsoft dont comment on rumours.....

  • 10.01.2007 3:28 PM PST

This is a rumor worth commenting on if it were not true.

Yep, but Bungie does, and they have neither confirmed or denied, they said contact Microsoft for comment.

There seems to be an announcement pending, but just after releasing their biggest game yet seems so illogical.

If it's true, then compound this rumor with (a) FASA was shut down just a month ago, and (b) MSFT let go of Bizzare just last week, that means MSFT is moving towards the direction of pulling out game development sector altogether.

Hm.

Which means MSFT is about to cut their losses in gaming. But Xbox 360 will not survive without sufficient first-party support. That means the entire EDD will be in trouble. (Well, EDD has been losing billions for over 8 years now, but cutting off Bungie is just going to hurt EDD even more. What's Xbox division gonna stand on? Live?!?)

I have a feeling this is true as well.

Key things - MS retains the ownership of anything/all Halo.

Bungie (or whatever they MAY become) will most likely become either freelance or partially owned by MS (say 49%), That way they can continue to develop Halo for MS, and can do other IP.

I am sure if this is the case, Bungie has to pay back some $$$ to MS - either cash or guaranteed delivery of "Halo + n".

My guess is this all came about due to a "threat"/desire of key Bungie persons to do other things. Given the option of "losing" these guys to a new dev studio, MS will come to an agreement allowing them more autonomy/complete automony in exchange for certain services/$$$$. That way it is a win-win for both - "Bungie" gets to do other things, MS is freed from the overhead of a 200 person studio, and MS retains Halo for itself to be developed as sees fit.

Either way, without Bungie, the whole Xbox division just seems like a foolish venture. It's even an unprofitable one with Bungie. This year EDD might break even because of Bungie (i.e., Halo 3), and now MS is gonna cut off Bungie? Wow. That means EDD will dip back below red in a couple years if not the next.

  • 10.01.2007 3:34 PM PST

That is a pathetic response. R.I.P. Bungie? Why, the only reason Halo was good was because of Bungie, not MS.

I can see reasons for Bungie doing it, but MS is dropping the ball on too many developers. First FASA (where is crimson skies 2), then Bizarre (one of the dumbest moves ever ms) and now Bungie...sucks for MS more than anyone.

Agreed. How MS could let go of Bizzare is....well..bizzare!!! What were they thinking?

Anyway, come on Bungie and/or MS...let us know if these rumours are true or not.

Yeah, FASA, Bizzare, and now Bungie. Seems like MS is moving towards a certain direction... I don't like where this is going...

Seriously, MSFT should be acquiring good studios like BioWare right now, not cutting off more and more studios.

Anyway, I'm just waiting for MS to deny or confirm it... Wow. and I thought EDD was going to beat projection and deliver profit this fiscal year. -blam!-. EDD is not gonna look good after this year. it's time to reevaluate MSFT's growth potential.

Again, why the ripping on MS? IF this is true, MS may not have had any option. Either they lose key Bungie persons who leave to form a new studio outside of MS, or they work with them to somehow maintain a relationship going forward. Yes, MS still owns "halo" and the Bungie name, but without the key people the studio is not the same. This way, MS can set some terms (assuming they went this way - Halo4, support for other Halo projects like Halo Wars, PJ game), they keep Bungie together as a unit (for maybe eventual sale to 3rd party or to Bungie stakeholders).

Again MS may have had no option. They "lose" the key people or they try to work with them.

All this talk of Halo 4 too. I seriously beyond anything hope there isn`t a Halo 4!

Yes, we've all loved the Halo series. Halo 3 (of which i still haven't finished) is great and good fun but that should be it. Enough with Halo! We have Halo Wars on the horizon and that should be it. No more in the Halo universe please!
